The Indian government places a high priority on managing and conserving water. The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) was introduced with the goals of improving water efficiency and supplying irrigation to all fields on 1 July 2015. Creating water sources, allocating and overseeing water, using it in fields and expanding associated activities are all part of this strategy. According to a notification from the Jal Shakti Ministry, this would benefit farmers with small land holdings by increasing water-use efficiency through the use of innovative technology like the Internet of Things (IoT) and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition).

The government hopes to provide a strong backend infrastructure for micro-irrigation systems using pressurized subterranean tubes in particular. In order to improve Water Use Efficiency (WUE) at the farm level, the scheme will also make use of SCADA systems and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for real-time water accounting and management. The government claims that these enhancements will contribute to higher farm revenues, increased agricultural output and long-term sustainability of the irrigation environment.
